Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to wear my retainer?
Initially, retainers are typically worn full-time for several months, then transitioned to nighttime wear. To keep your teeth in their new positions long-term, most patients continue wearing retainers at night indefinitely — teeth can shift at any age.
What's the difference between fixed and removable retainers?
Removable retainers (clear or wire) can be taken out for eating, brushing, and cleaning, and are worn as directed — usually at night. Fixed retainers are a thin wire bonded behind your front teeth that works 24/7 without you having to remember to wear them. Both are effective; the right choice depends on your treatment plan and lifestyle.
How do I clean my retainer?
Rinse removable retainers with lukewarm water after wear, and gently brush them with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner. Avoid hot water (it can warp the plastic) and whitening toothpaste (it can scratch). For fixed retainers, floss daily under the wire using a floss threader or water flosser.
What if my retainer breaks or gets lost?
Call us right away. Teeth can begin shifting within days, so the sooner we can replace or repair your retainer, the better. We can scan you for a new retainer digitally using our iTero scanner.
How often should I have my retainer checked?
We recommend post-orthodontic monitoring visits to confirm your teeth are stable and your retainer still fits properly. Fixed retainers are checked at your regular cleanings to ensure the bond is intact.
